Seat joins the automotive industry's disruption with this Open Innovation project.

Starting point:

Until now, the motor industry’s business was summarized in a very simple formula: try to sell as many cars as possible. But, what impact will technological innovations, changing consumer habits or new social trends such as the collaborative economy have on it?


As has already happened in other sectors (from music to banking, television to hotels), the automotive industry is on the verge of disruption. Usual presences in our day-to-day lives such as combustion engines, diesel or owned cars will give way to a new generation of self-driving, hyper-connected, smart vehicles with the possibility of renting them by the day, hour or minute.

 

In this business model, data will be the new oil and the digital ecosystem of cars will be the main source of income for the automotive industry. Manufacturers such as SEAT will rely heavily on the digital services and applications, they are able to offer in their cars.

 

In this context of revolution in mobility, SEAT seeks to become a partner of an “Easy, connected and sustainable mobility experience”.sostenible de movilidad”. 

Objectives:

SEAT identifies the need to find new sources of income in addition to its traditional core business in order to compensate for the change in user behavior with respect to the purchase of vehicles and to prepare itself to be able to continue leading the sector in the coming years.

Market research, idea scouting and field testing to identify new opportunities in mobility services..

Design of mobility business models.

Definition of shared income/benefit agreements..

Setting up contacts with potential partners, defining collaboration proposals and closing agreements.

Definition, development and MVP´s launch for the services.

Implementation of communication and marketing strategies.

KPI’s evaluation and follow-up for the services launched. 

Results:

We ended up developing an ecosystem of potential partners in Spain, including large corporations and small disruptive startups. We provided support in defining the mobility services strategy to be developed, including the agreement with a paid parking company and the purchase of a carsharing start-up. We helped create a new subsidiary focused on the creation and operation of new businesses and developed a mobility services app.

With all this, we would like to think that SEAT is today better prepared for the exciting challenges that the mobility sector has in store for it.
